That yet another bar has opened on Avenue C should no longer be shocking, but the Alphabet Lounge brings a different kind of surprise to this still desolate-feeling stretch of Alphabet City: sticker shock. Eight-dollar martinis (well-made ones, it must be added) may not warrant a double take in Midtown, but in this developing edge of the East Village, they are a surprise.

But the price tag is indicative of what the Alphabet Lounge is striving for: to set itself apart from the dives in its vicinity. This becomes clear even before you enter: the bar’s name is written on its windows in classy gold-leaf Art Deco letters. Inside, the candle-lit bar feels like a well-appointed but friendly social club, with large red-vinyl banquettes that can seat groups of eight and small tables set up in back on a raised platform that is sometimes used as a stage. Though far east, Alphabet Lounge is already attracting large crowds, especially for its weekend DJ-led house-music parties and for its fetish party on the first Sunday of each month. The well-stocked bar serves a variety of bottled beer (no tap) and, of course, those wallet-busting martinis. — Yigal Schleifer (The New York Times)

Alphabet Lounge - New York Magazine Bar Guide

Skulking on the corner of Avenue C and 7th Street, this modest spot combines the grittiness of a neighborhood dive with the colored-lit stage and red-leather banquettes of a jazz club. Featuring DJed theme nights and the occasional rumpled rock band, the bar attracts gatherings of locals whose aesthetic varies from night to night. Although drinks like the caipirinha and the mojito are advertised, it somehow seems more appropriate to have a low-end brew in your hand. On a slow Tuesday night, the Alphabet Lounge is the perfect place to hang out on your own: With friends present, you'd feel guilty talking over the band, which is really playing just for you. — Sara Stewart
